Origins pt.7

This week in our Origins series will are covering Deuteronomy.  Each message will start with a short video from  thebibleproject.com

Broken up into three main sections, Deuteronomy finds the Israelites poised to enter the promised land. Moses gives them a pep-talk that’s basically like “Hey, remember all the times since the dawn of man that you’ve disobeyed God? STOP DOING THAT.” He extols them to listen (obey the rules of the covenant) and love (cultivate the true motivation for obeying the laws) to be fruitful in the promised land. Will they? (Spoiler: Probably not. But God’s gonna somehow redeem it anyway).

This week in our Origins series will are covering  Numbers.  Each message will start with a short video from  thebibleproject.com

Who doesn’t love a good road trip? Apparently, the Israelites. This video relates the epic journey of God’s chosen people as they bungle their way to the promised land. From Mt. Sinai to Moab, we see the Israelites behaving in disobedience to God (shocker) and doubting His plan (you don’t say?). Responding to the continued mutiny of His people (even Moses-say it ain’t so!), God eventually grants them what they want: exile. Yet despite their rejection, God continues to protect them, illustrating the Torah’s interwoven theme of His faithfulness (promise?).

This week in our Origins series will are covering  Leviticus.  Each message will start with a short video from  thebibleproject.com

Leviticus: that weird book of the Torah you’ve been avoiding! Highlighting ideas of purity, impurity, Priesthood, and the Tabernacle, this book details the rituals that the Israelites maintained to be able to be in God’s presence. Though the seemingly gruesome practices and obvious obsession with goats can seem strange, Leviticus makes one theme very clear: nothing is arbitrary when it comes to the Israelite’s God. We see clearly through these detailed rituals and relationships that their God is a different God-one who lovingly provides a way for His people to be near Him.

This week in our Origins series will are covering  Exodus 19-40.  Each message will start with a short video from  thebibleproject.com

At the beginning of Exodus, the Israelites are exiled in the wilderness. Their Father provides for them, but there’s a lot of back and forth between God and His chosen people about what’s good and what’s not good (sound familiar?). The Israelites have a covenant with God, but then immediately break it (sound familiar again?). This video goes deeper into the relational aspect of the discord between God’s promise and man’s disobedience, and what it means about the deep significance of a continually faithful Redeemer.

This week in our Origins series will are covering  Exodus 1-18.  Each message will start with a short video from thebibleproject.com

This fully-animated video dives into the second book of the bible, Exodus, and picks up where Genesis left off. From Jacob to Moses, we see the journey of the Israelites as they leave their land, come to Egypt as guests, are fruitful and multiply, get enslaved again, are saved from the plague, embrace their freedom, escape from Egypt, wander in the wilderness, see bread fall from the sky, and still find time to complain that God’s not doing anything.

THE COVENANT…

“‘I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.’ So Abram went, as the Lord had told him…”  Genesis 12:1-4

GOD MAKES COVENANT RELATIONSHIP.

“Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.”  Genesis 15:4-6

COVENANT IS RESPONDED TO WITH FAITH.

“For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.”  Hebrews 9:15

COVENANT IS A FORESHADOWING OF THE NEW COVENANT.

Watch the book of Genesis chapters 12-50 come to life in this animated sketch of its literary design.

God makes a promise to bless rebellious humanity through the family of Abraham, and the story follows this promise through four generations.
